The Tour
Churchill has become so much more than a historical figure. Some see him as the greatest Briton. Others are less enthuiastic. And what about his present-day image? How have some shaped it to suit their ulterior motives? More than many, Churchill has become the subject of distortion and disinformation.
The wartime leader dominates our image of Churchill. But his long-term political career is full of interest. Controversial and not afraid of making enemies, Churchill strove always to do what he considered right.

In 1900 Winston Churchill entered Parliament. He was not yet twenty-six.
His subsequent political career was to last for more than sixty years.
He occupied various government positions, and served two terms as Prime Minister.
Churchill changed political parties twice. And when he rejoined the Conservatives he remained in many ways an outsider.
He didn’t endear himself to his fellow politicians. Indeed, he earned enemies who threatened his political career.
Also he was a radical. As a young Liberal MP he enacted legislation to alleviate hardship and to improve conditions. Much of his legacy endures today in provision such as National Insurance and the State Pension.
Like many people, Churchill had his contradictions. For instance, he was a firm believer in the British Empire. But he condemned exploitation and tyranny.
This tour around Westminster visits sites which represent defining moments in Churchill’s political career. We consider his high and low points. Also we consider aspects of his political legacy which perhaps we tend to forget nowadays.
We finish just along the road from St James’s Park Underground Station.
