The Tour
There was a time when the area downriver from the City of London was alive with maritime trade. Goods arrived from all over the globe to fill our shops and fuel our industry.
The river teemed with shipping. Dockers and lightermen toiled to empty the holds of cargo ships. Sailors were paid off and came ashore looking for fun after months of hardship.

But then, the docks and the quays fell silent. Soon development threatened to scour away the traces of London’s maritime glory.
Thankfully, if you know where to look, there are still remains of this time, tidemarks left behind among the reshaped East End.
This is a story which tells of mighty feats of planning and engineering, but also of a once-thriving community.
Come hear about the growth of the docks, of Old London’s Scandinavian quarter, and the salty tang of life spent on London’s tidal artery.
