The Dark Side of the Green

The Tour

Dark stories lurk behind many areas of the East End. But what do you know about the dark stories that lurk within the history of Bethnal Green?

Boundary Street 1890 - The Dark Side of the Green

Boundary Street 1890

You may know what Ronnie Kray did at the Blind Beggar in 1966, but what did Arthur Harding do at the Bluecoat Boy in 1911? And what happened outside the Carpenters’ Arms in 1965?

The London Burkers 1832 - The Dark Side of the Green

The London Burkers

Why should you think twice before accepting a drink from John Bishop and Thomas Williams?

Or before letting Benjamin Russen teach your daughter at the church school?

Join me in a stroll through my manor to visit sites connected with a range of wrongdoing.

This tour encompasses crimes and wrongdoing in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It takes in murder, rape and unrest, as well as the struggle to impose law and order.

Bethnal Green’s past is littered with dark deeds and dodgy dudes, but these are more than just salacious tales. They represent some important moments in the history of law and order in this country.

As the lid is lifted, come and peek at the darkness that lurks beneath.
