A Dickens of a City

The Tour

Charles Dickens is the ultimate London writer, in tune with the rhythms of the capital and its people. His is the authentic voice of the City, one founded on a journalist’s observations and shot through with human understanding. But how familiar are you with his unique style?

Dickens’ London goes beyond its image as the Victorian hub of the British Empire. Rather its muddle of confused alleys and humble offices, of choked churchyards and impenetrable neighbourhoods, evokes a world being changed even as he wrote.

Old inns and counting houses reach out from earlier times. So too do imprisonment for debt and the risky business of stagecoach travel.

This tour explores the oldest parts of the City of London – the Borough and the area of Cornhill. We follow narrow alleys and contemplate the fateful sweep of the Thames.

All the way, you will hear the words of Charles Dickens through a selection of readings from his novels.
