The Tour
Once a semi-rural hamlet, nineteenth-century Bethnal Green was swallowed up as London grew. It was to become the most deprived area of the newly industrialised hub of the British Empire. The battle for Bethnal Green began as the hamlet struggled to cope with the urban life thrust upon it.
Many took up the challenge of improving life in the growing metropolis. Philanthropists addressed the issues not addressed by the authorities.
They resisted the siren call of profit margins, and put the welfare of their fellows before self enrichment.
Even today there are challenges which Bethnal Green has to face. From housing and health to the air that we breathe, we will visit sites which testify to the fight to ensure a decent chance for all.
